Opinions: Army of One
Hello everybody … I’m really interested in knowing what you people think of this local hip-hop band, army of one. I need you to back up your answers with facts or references to their tracks.
Only those who know the band, heard their music, saw their video clips are eligible to answer here. Please be subjective and fair.
Thanks everybody

i found them rather disappointing in terms of content, both musically and lyrically. considering the purpose which hiphop is meant to serve as a voice for the oppressed and frustrated, youd think the middle east would be an ideal location for truely original hiphop to emerge, what with all the conflict etc.
lebanese/palestinian/hebrew hiphop is something the middle east should be proud of, but army of one are nothing more than the same commercial crap you see on MTV. all style no substance. then again perhaps thats a reflection of their environment.
having said that, kudos to whoever did put the band together, that took some real balls and i’m sure it takes an equally large amount to put up with the criticism i’m sure theyre getting.

I personally think they’re good rappers and quite talented. I mean honestly, if you just listen to the music you wouldn’t in a million years realize they are not American.. well except for that line in arabic. Anyway, my point is, because they are kuwaiti/Arabs, kuwaiti and arabic people don’t take them seriously. I really hope they make it! They deserve it, one of them I don’t remember his name, he’s the thin (kuwaiti looking, not sure he is though) guy anyway, he can rap better than half of the rappers you see on MTV. mashallah.. Allah yiwafig-hom.. They ROCK!

here’s a review I read while ago;

Well, when you consider the fact that they’re q80, u actually realize that they’re not bad at all, the lyrics, well it’s rap, so all the same, and the beats r reeeaaallly good (How we do, reprezentin’, that day) but again; Rap is supposed to be some kinda way to complain, but umm… Kuwait is not exactly a ghetto style country, maybe if they’de sing more abt the actual real q80 life it would have been better… other than that, i think that they’re not bad at all, and i really enjoy listennin to them from time to time…

Don’t want to reiterate what these guys have just said but all in all, I think they have a good beat. I like how they incorporate Arabic instruments and beats seeing as how other “Western” rappers have dove into Indian instruments.
I just don’t like the fact that they try to beef it up with too much wannabe gangsta attitude and lyrics. Be original. Use your culture, folktales (yes! really!) and so on. Also, why not remix old Kuwaiti songs (the ones that are on 89.3) and use the catchy beats and add in your own lyrics? And again, I am serious! ‘Luck.

In the end they are just cultural products. The shame in the situation is that they prove to be the products of acculturation instead, and by that I mean they are just original wannabes. I am sure after they get their spotlight they would steer into a signature of their own… because it would mean their survival.

I hate rap and I think they (Army of none) really suck. You should be proud of your own Kuwaiti music like Aswat and Samry. Something that fits your heritage at least. Stop acting like Americans and most importantly stop singing like them be proud of what you got.

I know Dub-G and Arabface personally & I do like their stuff. I admire them because I know they have worked hard to achieve what they have.
Nawaf (Alien Records owner) is also a close friend of mine.
I do think that they try to be those gangsta’s in the States rapping about ghetto’s in Kuwait.. I mean seriously!
I love their new stuff much more than Reprezentin tho!
August 18th, 2006 01:33
I know that one of them is palestinian, his nickname is arabface, his cousin used to take classes with me in school..

I think they are very talented. When i first heard them i thought they were a new American band. I was suprised to know they are all Kuwaiti. I felt bad when i heard that their album was not allowed to be sold in Kuwait. The reason for that is unknown. They really are very good and have a lot of potentail. I wouldn’t be suprised if they made it to the VMA’s.

I’m commenting twice because ending at 13 comments is bad luck, well, that’s my opinion anyway : P
So to sum up, I guess just a little bit of genuinity and orginality would better the outcome. Don’t force that gangsta talk for the hell of it.
This might sound a little nerdy but research first (history: Kuwaiti history, rap/R&B/etc…whatever helps and whatever feels good). Then let it all settle down and sink in. And then write and don’t stop until you’ve poured your heart out.

Their lyrics are crappy. We should give a chance to others; I know of some.

I think they are not bad, even if they are not the best its good to see arabs mix up there types of music instead of only talking and singing about love and broken hearts.. i hope they make more arabs want to sing hip hop rap and ALL types of songs..=)

i think they’re good, their songs just arent that deep or anything, its like they’re talented, they just have nothing to really rap about,i dont think rap’s about just rhyming its about words that have meaning, words that reach n touch whoever listens

i think , if youre going to rap , you should do it in your language. If English/American is your language , then you better be good and have a strong message if youre going to be any good in rapping. Honestly , to all people who said they liked their music , if you knew nothing about them , and just heared the track randomly on the radio in amongst other tracks , would you not say..what is this crap ??!!! or the least , you will change the radio station and never remember hearing any of their tracks. Arabs have a strong message a real message , and hip-hop is a great way to deliver this message , whatever that message may be. But if you immitate , no one will ever listen to you..if you really want to make a change and be heared , you need to inovate..bring something new to the table.
There are quite a few Palestinian and Lebanese groups , doing it…theyre being real about it , theyre trying to innovate..they are not there yet , but they are on the way..they have something…others like euphrates who are iraqis living in canada , they rap in english , however they represent the arab world very strongly , and they are good..their beats are solid , their ryhmes and flows are on point , and there is thought in what they say….they are innovating…
